Intergenerational community service offers students innovative ways to deepen their understanding of aging. TIGP develops opportunities for students to take a leadership role where they can gain valuable experience by learning and doing. Taking ownership of their community experiences builds on their social and individual responsibility, strengthening their community. We support the development of intergenerational clubs or committees within high schools, creating opportunities for students to make connections with seniors in their communities.

Students have taken leadership roles in:

teaching seniors how to use
    computers and the Internet
developing and supporting a
    breakfast program for seniors
coordinating intergenerational
    events
organizing food drives for
    community seniors
delivering food to shut-ins through
    Meals-on-Wheels
visiting seniors living in long-term
    care facilities
planning special events for seniors

Community organizations attend our Community Service Volunteer Information Fairs each year to highlight student volunteer opportunities. Students gain awareness of services within their community and learn of training and support available for each volunteer opportunity. These fairs offer students one-stop access where they fulfil the requirements for the community service volunteer credits toward their high school diploma.
