Frank Chapel, Volunteer

In more than 100 Toronto schools each week, over 200+ intergenerational
volunteers spend half a day assisting in curriculum-linked activities
relating to reading skills, literacy and the development of English-language
skills.
TIGP invites prospective volunteers to an open house and orientation
where they can explore intergenerational volunteer opportunities
based on their skills, knowledge, experience and availability.
Volunteers are placed within schools, community agencies and organizations
upon completion of an application, screening and police reference
check.
As with our other programs, volunteers are given specialized training
to prepare them for volunteering in a school environment. They gain
skills and expertise necessary to help children increase their reading
skills, level of literacy and command of the English-language.
In one long-standing and highly successful program, senior volunteers
work with students to not only help with their English, but to also
help them learn about Canadian history, customs, practices and infrastructure.
Requests for these types of programs are increasing due to:
increased class sizes and increased demands on teacher’s
time
increased numbers of students who are newcomers (children,
youth and adults).
