Preparation to Work with Frail Elderly

As a volunteer who is preparing him or herself to work collaboratively with a senior who is a resident in a long term care facility, you need to take into consideration the following:

Time needed to attend a general health and safety orientation
that the facility may require. These sessions usually last 40 to
60 minutes. Any immunization requirements will be discussed.

Time that you will need to spend with the resident in order to
get them used to the idea of learning how to use the
    computer.

Early stage of relationship – ideally you should visit the
Resident 2 or 3 times a week for the first few weeks and then
one time per week after that for at least 3 months.

Your Volunteer Coordinator will inform you of the frequency
most suitable for the individual resident to whom you have
    been matched.

About one half hour (30 minutes) is the appropriate amount of
time  to spend with the resident as they may tire easily. This
will depend on the abilities of each individual resident.

You will discuss with the resident the times that you are able
to come and encourage them to choose which time is best
for them. Remember to check that your chosen time does
not conflict with the time that the family usually visits.

Also, in relation to time frames, your Volunteer Coordinator will
suggest the frequency and duration of time that is suitable for
the resident with whom you are working. The Volunteer
Coordinator will inform you about daily care routines and
other activity time frames in the home, and then you and the
Volunteer Coordinator can select the time frames that will
    work for everyone.

Remember to consult with the Volunteer Coordinator as you
get to know the resident regarding any time frame changes.
