Resident selection for program

Meet with resident and explain the Project.

Obtain resident consent for Project.

Volunteer orientation

Provide an orientation for volunteer on nursing home rules and regulations as well as general health and safety considerations. (Generally 1 hour).

Volunteer/resident matching

Match volunteer to resident.

Suggest to volunteer the frequency and duration of visits most suitable for the individual resident. Generally, about one half hour (30 minutes) is the appropriate amount of time to spend with the resident.

Ideally, the volunteer should visit the resident 2 or 3 times per week for the first few weeks, one time per week afterwards for at least three months.

Inform the volunteer of daily routines and other activity timeframes in the home.

Determine together the timeframe that will work for everyone.

Volunteer/nursing home staff consultation

Ongoing discussions.

Project paperwork completion.
